Summer Reading List 2020

This summer my goal is to read a total of 7 books. I know this number is not groundbreaking but I always say that I will read SO many books in the summer and then the time flies by and I’ve ended up only reading one magazine and maybe the biography of some celebrity (don’t get me wrong these are great but just not my main mission for the season). In order to achieve my goal of reading a decent amount of books, I decided to choose an attainable number…and if I surpass it then I shall take myself out for ice cream.

Now that you know my magic number, I also want to chat a little bit about my magic genres. For the 7 books, I tried to vary the content with one purpose: to read more stories by people of color. This has not been front of mind for me before when I chose stories to read and I am ashamed of this. Reading is a great way to learn, grow, reflect, and most importantly, to see a glimpse into the experiences of those that differ from us. This is why reading is so beautiful. I have made a pact with myself to be more conscious about the books I choose to read and the authors I choose to promote. I want to add more diversity onto my book lists so that I can start the process of understanding what it’s like to be a person of color in the United States today. And for that matter, the process of understanding what it’s like for other minorities around me.

Aside from this decision, I’ve also included a fun chick-lit novel, a few dramas, and okay, yes, a celebrity biography (…but hey, it’s Tina Fey, so I couldn’t skip it).

My book list round up for summer 2020

  • I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

  • Ask Again Later by Jill A. Davis

  • The Joy Luck Club by Any Tan

  • Bossypants by Tina Fey

  • The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

  • Such A Fun Age by Kiley Reid

  • One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London
